Good Things

This is a monthly series on the blog where I catalogue all the good things that have happened lately. Mostly, they’re happy and positive. Sometimes, the best things in life are challenges that push us to grow and stretch. It’s so important to me to take note of all the emotions I experience, to validate every feeling and process them individually. Part of processing my life in a healthy, productive way is to practice gratitude on a regular basis.

I’m Baaaack!! (an update and good things from March)

It’s been about a month since my last post, so I’m popping in again for our monthly series on gratitude and “life lately”. March was a really great month for us, and I have no end of things to share.

Good Things

We started off the month with my birthday! I had gifts sent or given to me from far and near, and it was really a sweet start to year twenty-seven. Which, by the way, I can’t believe I’m heading into my late twenties. Just this last month, we watched the Friends episode where Rachel turns 30 and I totally (!!) get how she felt. I’ve been mourning the end of my twenties for at least two years. Unnecessary? Maybe. But true all the same.

We continued to get to know our new friends at our church in Kuala Lumpur, and we really were blessed by their hospitality and friendship. I can’t stress how special our time there was or how sad we were to leave. We loved KL!! We look forward to the day when we can meet again with some of those awesome people.

Good Things: February

While we’re traveling, an average day in the life of the Murphmans is surprisingly normal. We have a schedule of commitments and activities, including the same regular tasks you have like grocery shopping and exercising. But since we have the privilege of living our normal life against an ever changing backdrop of places, we try our best to get out of our comfort zones and experience new things too. And this month has not disappointed.

Good Things Lately: January

Good Things: January

So, if you’ve been reading the blog for awhile, you know I like to put up a super casual post every once in a blue moon recounting the good things that have been happening during the last little bit of time. This year, I’m planning to do monthly posts, and I’m not ashamed to say I’m pretty proud of myself for scheduling this one out and not having to post about January on February 3rd! (; I suppose we should just count that as a “good thing” and then get to it:

Good Things: December

Good Things | December from

At the end of every year, it’s common practice to look back at all the decisions and events that transpired in the past 365(ish) days. Recall, review, reconsider. It’s one of my favorite times of the year, and before January 1st I can guarantee we’re going to post a wrap up just like last year!

But as I’m going back over the last year on the blog, I realized something truly horrifying. In all of 2015… there were only two Good Things posts! TWO!! We had started quite well in 2014 with this habit of gratitude, but somehow we got off track this last year. Which, by the way, we reached three years of blogging the other week. Can you believe it?

I’m working to get back on track with our Good Things this next year, and I think a once a month roundup is a good goal. Hold me to it!

So.. here goes for December:

Good Things Lately (or not so lately)

It’s been ages since we have written a post about all the good things that have come our way. Since we’re creeping towards Thanksgiving, I thought it was about time to get back in the habit of recording our gratitude and positive vibes in this online space.

Side note: This is the first time I won’t be spending my favorite holiday celebrating with family and/or friends.. Europe, why oh why won’t you celebrate Thanksgiving?? Ok. I know why. But it would be nice…

good things lately from

Tyler and I spent a few moments this morning putting our heads together and coming up with an epic list of thanksgiving. Here are [just some of ] the good things we’ve enjoyed during our travels thus far:

– pizzas the size of our heads in Italy (for 4 euros)

– beers for 25 cents (sense a theme? ;))

– cheap transportation around an entire continent (who knew Europe could be cheap?!)

– dogs that are super cuddly

– learning about history in Germany

– feeling blessed at the ways we as Americans of this generation have avoided war on our soil

– seeing so many family members that I hadn’t seen in years

– getting to see my cousin’s [super cute] son for the first time and becoming his new favorite people (ok so any new people are his new favorite but it feels good to have kids love you)

– the hospitality of friends and family

– having a personal tour guide make our visit to Germany unexpectedly awesome (thanks Claudia!)

– unusually wonderful and warm weather this season.. we’ve seen European autumn at its finest!

– lots of time together, which leads to…

– lots of time to talk about ourselves, our plans for the year, and our plans for the future, which leads to…

– lots of time to argue intensely, which leads to…

– lots of time to work on our communication and grow closer together in our marriage

– finalizing plans for spending our Christmas and New Years with people we love!!!! in a city we love!!!

So while I go off and scheme on how to make my Thanksgiving extra special with just the two of us, you take a few minutes and jot down some good things you’ve experienced lately. Share some with us if you’d like!
